1The work
AI reconciliation products match transactions between two sources (bank and ledger, subledger and general ledger, one entity and another), propose explanations for what does not match, and prepare the reconciliation for a person to review and certify. The makers in this note say they match on context rather than exact references, let accountants write matching rules in plain language, and flag unusual balances and missing support.
A reconciliation proves that a balance in the ledger is supported by something outside it. For cash, that is the bank statement. For a receivable or a payable, it is the subledger. For an accrual, it is a schedule and its support. For intercompany, it is the other entity's books. Month after month, accountants match the items that agree, investigate the ones that do not, record adjusting entries, attach support and sign.
Volume is the problem AI is sold against. A company with many bank accounts, card programmes and payment processors can have hundreds of thousands of lines a month. Rules-based matching handles the exact matches; the remainder (timing differences, fees netted from settlements, partial payments, references that differ by a character) is where people spend their time.
A person must stay in the loop for the decision that an unreconciled difference is explained, for any adjusting entry, and for certification of the account. The preparer and the reviewer should be different people, and the evidence of review should survive an audit. Products that auto-certify low-risk accounts move that line; whether that is acceptable depends on the account, the risk and the company's control design.
2Where AI is applied
Makers describe matching across many sources with context-aware or AI-designed rules, anomaly detection on balances and patterns across periods, exception queues for reviewers, and links from each match back to the statement or document behind it.

3Limits and control questions
For a listed company, any automated step that feeds the financial statements sits inside internal control over financial reporting, which management must evaluate and report on; the SEC's interpretive guidance for that report is Release 33-8810.1 COSO describes its Internal Control, Integrated Framework as originally issued in 1992 and refreshed in 2013.2
A match the model is confident about can still be wrong. Ask for the false-match rate as well as the match rate, and for how a reviewer can see the basis for any automated match.
Thresholds are a judgment, not a setting. The SEC staff's view on materiality is that "exclusive reliance on this or any percentage or numerical threshold has no basis in the accounting literature or the law."3 A tool that flags only what crosses a percentage leaves the qualitative items to a person.
NIST's AI Risk Management Framework is a common reference for those questions. NIST says the framework is "intended for voluntary use and to improve the ability to incorporate trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use, and evaluation of AI products, services, and systems."4 Its first version is published as NIST AI 100-1.5
Vendor claims about AI are claims, not findings. The SEC has brought settled charges against two investment advisers "for making false and misleading statements about their purported use of artificial intelligence (AI)."6 A finance team that relies on a vendor's description should ask for evidence of what the feature does with its own data.

6Questions to put to a vendor
- What share of our lines would the product match without review, and how was that measured?
- How is each automated match explained, and can a reviewer see the source documents in one place?
- Who writes and approves matching rules, and is every rule change logged?
- Does the product ever certify an account or post an adjusting entry on its own?
- How does it handle fees, foreign exchange differences and partial settlements?
- What does it do with an item that matched last month and reverses this month?
- Which data does it use to train its models, and is any of it from other customers?
- What evidence of preparation and review does it produce for the external auditor?
